interesting that Russia thinks that by planting a titanium flag under the arctic it signifies Russian sovereignty of the region. We don't usually make titanium flags for our clients but it is possible. Maybe you would like a flag made by us to plant somewhere so you too can lay claim to a small part of the world. call flyingtheflag on 01788 833102 to discuss your requirements or mail us at sales@flyingtheflag.com

Iraq's US-appointed Governing Council has approved a new national flag.

The design consists of a pale blue crescent on a white background, with a yellow strip between two blue lines at the bottom.

The new design's crescent represents Islam, while the blue lines are meant to be the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and the yellow strip stands for the Kurdish minority.

IGC spokesman Hameed al-Kafaei said the flag heralded "a new era" as Iraq could not continue using its flag from the Saddam Hussein era. However not everyone is happy. It is reported that, in general, the Iraqi people would rather have water and electricity. This on the other hand deflects from the real importance of flags as symbols of national identity and hopefully national unity. This new flag is so different from the old maybe a new hope is awakening in a long suffering country.

The Beijing Olympics have now closed. It will be remembered as a spectacular event showcasing China's vast resources and a British sporting resurgence. The flag has now passed to London. The Mayor, Boris Johnson was enthusiastic about the sporting and cultural ideals of the Olympic Movement and explained that the flag now flying was only a symbol and not the 'real' Olympic Flag. The flag is steeped in symbolism as Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympic Games, explained: the meaning of the flag reinforces the idea of the Olympic Movement's universality, as it brings together all the countries of the world.

"The Olympic flag has a white background, with five interlaced rings in the centre: blue, yellow, black, green and red. This design is symbolic it represents the five continents of the world, united by Olympism, while the six colours are those that appear on all the national flags of the world at the present time."
